Own Your Response

Whenever you are put in a tough spot, for example if you’re reprimanded in a way you don’t deserve to be treated… pay attention to what they say to you. Those of us with a short temper may find it very difficult to bite our tongue in silence. It may take everything in us to not lash out back, especially if you’re reprimanded in public. Those of us who shy away from confrontation, would find ourselves ashamed in front of everyone, with our head hanging low. Whoever is being offensive would identify you as a doormat and would take the opportunity to ill-treat you once again.

Deep down you know how you want to be treated. But shouting louder than the person in front of you especially with an audience will not result in you being treated with respect. I’ve learnt that correcting someone’s actions in private is better than doing the same in public. The person will understand the lesson from your words without their emotions overriding their thoughts. Next time you’re being reprimanded in public and you want to give them a piece of your mind, escort them to a corner and respectfully let them know they’ve crossed a line. Be firm in where you stand.

Because nobody has the right to own how you respond besides yourself.
